Main Street Cafe

This article is part of my Chinese New Year 2019 compilation.

Special thanks to Cititel Penang for extending this food review invitation.

Cititel Penang is a 4-star hotel along Penang Road (Jalan Penang). In spirit of the upcoming Chinese New Year, the hotel lobby is decorated with a centerpiece that features cherry blossoms with Chinese tassels.
In addition, Cititel Penang will be serving a series of buffet lunches and dinners during the festive period. This evening, the hotel is giving us a sneak peek into the upcoming menu. Food is served in Main Street Cafe, the hotel's all-day dining restaurant.
The meal begins with an attractive platter of Salmon Yee Sang. As per tradition, all diners gather around the table and toss yee sang (鱼生) into the air with chopsticks. It is believed that the higher one tosses, the greater success one achieves in the new year.
The buffet spread is dominated by seafood on ice. A towering centerpiece has large prawns held in place by toothpicks. At the base, there are other marine delicacies like oysters, scallops and bay mussels.
The Chinese consider fish to be auspicious especially during Chinese New Year. This belief is reflected in the Shanghai-Style Deep-Fried Fish. The snapper is cut into bite-size fillets for customers' convenience.
Wok-Fried Prawns are served with slices of lychee, whose sweetness I find quite peculiar. Meanwhile, chili flakes provide a lovely touch of spiciness. The dish is also drizzled with sweet mayonnaise.
Soft-Shell Crabs are often served in Japanese restaurants. The oatmeal-crusted crabs are deep-fried until they become crispy. Curry leaves serve to enhance aroma. Personally, I feel that the crabs are not crispy enough. It would also be good if the pieces were made smaller.
Yellow Eel is stir-fried with capsicum, shallots and dried red chili peppers. The dish is moderately spicy as long as you avoid biting chili peppers. Cashew nuts and scallions are used as garnishes.
Japanese cuisine is represented by sushi (寿司), sashimi (刺身) and tempura (天ぷら). Japanese condiments like wasabi (山葵), pickled ginger (ガリ) and soy sauce (醬油) are provided.
Moving on, the cold platter contains delicacies like smoked duck, abalone slices, vegetarian char siew, seasoned baby octopus and seasoned jellyfish.
Prepared from glutinous rice, nian gao (年糕) is typically soft and sticky. A popular way to enjoy this snack is by sandwiching nian gao slices with sweet potato and taro. The sandwich is coated with batter, and then deep-frying until golden brown. Other interesting snacks are sesame balls (煎堆), yam balls (炸芋角) and money bags (福袋).
Diners are spoiled for choices when it comes to Chinese New Year cookies. Available today are pineapple tarts (黄梨酥), peanut cookies (花生饼), green pea cookies (青豆饼), tapioca cookies (番婆饼), beehive cookies (蜂窝饼) and love letters (鸡蛋卷). The cookies are kept in airtight jars to ensure that they remain fresh.
As for Western pastries, there are cheesecake, green tea cake, brownies, éclairs, meringue tarts, crème caramel and dragon fruit mousse.
Diners who enjoy cakes can also help themselves with Black Forest Cake, Orange Shortcake, Red Velvet Cake, Orange Mirror Cake and Fruit Mousse.
Cititel Penang's buffet lunch and dinner are served daily from 31 January 2019 to 10 February 2019, with the exception of Chinese New Year's Eve (4 February 2019) when only the Reunion Buffet Dinner is served. In all cases, yee sang is served at every table.

Mayflower

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Special thanks to Mayflower Car Rental and Mayflower Borneo for extending this transportation review invitation.

Mayflower Car Rental is a prominent car rental agency in Malaysia. The company has a presence in major airports including Kota Kinabalu International Airport. The counter is located in the airport's arrival hall, allowing customers to collect and return vehicles by the curb. Alternatively, the agency can also arrange pick-up and drop-off within Kota Kinabalu city center.
Mayflower's standard car is the Nissan Almera 1.5L AT. It is sufficiently comfortable for 4 persons. All Mayflower's vehicles are less than 5 years old. Rentals are available on daily, weekly and monthly basis. Mayflower does not impose any mileage restriction.
Located at Wisma Sabah, Mayflower Borneo provides one-stop travel solutions including hotel reservations, airline ticketing and airport transfer services. The company also offers a wide range of pleasure excursions throughout the Land Below the Wind.
One of the greatest attractions around Kota Kinabalu is island hopping in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, Malaysia's first marine national park. Several of the islands here, namely Gaya Island, Manukan Island and Mamutik Island, are home to pristine coral reefs.
Standing 4,095 meters above sea level, Mount Kinabalu is the tallest mountain in Malaysia. Mayflower Borneo offers comprehensive travel packages for climbers who wish to reach the peak.
If a 2- or 3-day climb is not your cup of tea, you may instead opt for a more relaxing trip in Kinabalu Park Headquarters. Other nearby attractions include Desa Dairy Farm, Poring Hot Springs and Sabah Tea Garden.
If you are planning to explore Sabah extensively, getting a rental car is a sound idea. Not only is it more economical, a rental car gives you the flexibility when you visit remote places like Kundasang. Mayflower Borneo's hotlines are Image may be NSFW.

Yee Fung Laksa

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Yee Fung Laksa (怡丰叻沙), is a popular eatery at Gaya Street, Kota Kinabalu. It is adjacent to 5 Star Hainanese Chicken Rice & BBQ. During lunch hours, it can be difficult to find an empty table here.
The restaurant is renowned for three dishes: Yee Fung Laksa (怡丰叻沙), Yee Fung Ngau Chap (怡丰牛杂) and Claypot Chicken Rice (沙煲鸡饭). Food used to come in small and large sizes, but only large size is available nowadays.
The titular Yee Fung Laksa (怡丰叻沙, RM8.50) is the main specialty here. Similar to Sarawak Laksa, the curry is rich in coconut milk. Its moderate spiciness flavors the egg noodle in a gentle manner. This dish contains shredded chicken and shrimps too.
The Claypot Chicken Rice (沙煲鸡饭, RM8.00) is quite savory, thanks to the presence of mushrooms, salted fish and dark soy sauce. It is advisable to mix the claypot contents thoroughly while the egg is still runny. I think this dish is quite tasty.
Teh Maderas (双层拉茶, RM3.50) consists of two distinct layers: milk tea and evaporated milk. Like Teh Tarik, Teh Maderas is pulled repeatedly between mugs so that the tea becomes frothy. I feel that this drink is way too sweet for me.
As we are avoiding beef this round, we are not able to taste Yee Fung Ngau Chap today. From what we heard, this dish is frequently recommended by locals.

Strawberry Garden Hotel

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Strawberry Garden Hotel is a small hotel in Kundasang, Sabah. Perched on a small hill beside the main road, the hotel is approximately 4 kilometers from Kinabalu Park and 2 kilometers from Kundasang War Memorial. Strawberry Garden Hotel does not have a view of Mount Kinabalu because it is obstructed by the hill.
The main building is where guests check in. Next to the reception office is a small restaurant. The eatery is currently closed for renovations. Fortunately for us, there are other restaurants near the hotel.
The new hotel wing is constructed on a slope above the main road. There are 8 guestrooms here. Strawberry Garden Hotel is undergoing construction to add more rooms.
Our room is comfortably spacious for two persons. It is equipped with a king-size bed, television, dressing table, clothes iron and coffee-making utensils. The room comes with an attached bathroom with heated water. Towels and limited toiletries are provided.
Each room has a small private balcony that overlooks the main road and the valley beyond. Because the weather in Kundasang is only around 20oC, the room does not have air conditioning.
In-house guests are allowed to visit the strawberry garden within the hotel's compound. It is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Admission is free for hotel guests, while non-guests are charged a paltry RM1.00 each.
In the terraced strawberry garden, there are rows of strawberry plants in individual pots or raised beds. Most strawberries are quite small and green in color. Perhaps the fruits are not ripe yet.
The check-in time and check-out time are 2:00pm and 12:00pm respectively. Considering the level of comfort and proximity to Kinabalu Park, Strawberry Garden Hotel is a decent choice of accommodation. Rooms can be booked by phone or online through Agoda.

Rasa Ria

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Special thanks to Rasa Ria Resort & Spa for extending this hotel review invitation.

Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort & Spa is a 5-star beach retreat in Tuaran, approximately an hour's drive from Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Rasa Ria is massive even when compared to sister properties like Rasa Sayang. The resort's vast grounds encompasses Rasa Ria Reserve, a 64-acre nature reserve, and Dalit Bay Golf & Country Club, an 18-hole golf course.
Rasa Ria has 499 guestrooms and suites in total. The hotel is divided into two wings: Garden Wing and Ocean Wing. The Garden Wing is where the majority of guestrooms are located. A towering Christmas tree stands in the middle of the open-air lobby. In support of environmentalism, Rasa Ria assembled the tree by using potted plants in recycled plastic bottles.
The lobby is decorated with traditional musical instruments such as gong, gendang, sompoton and kulintangan. Kulintangan consists of a row of pot gongs with different sizes; the lowest pitch gong is placed on the player's left. Kulintangan is stuck with two wooden beaters.
Rasa Ria is renowned for its picturesque Dalit Beach (Pantai Dalit). Measuring two kilometers in length, the beach faces the deep blue South China Sea. Owing to the resort's remote location, the beach here is not as crowded as the one at Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa.
We are staying at the Ocean Wing this weekend. With 173 guestrooms and suites, the Ocean Wing provides the highest level of luxury. This exclusive wing has a lobby of its own. As both lobbies are separated by a considerable distance, buggy rides are provided for the convenience of guests.
The arrival of each guest is greeted with the strike of a gong and welcoming melody of kulintangan. Ocean Wing guests enjoy special privileges such as exclusive access to Ocean Wing swimming pool and outdoor jacuzzi.
Our room, the Premier Sea View Room, covers 90 square meters and is very spacious for two persons. At the center of the room is a king-size bed with a bed bench in front. Next to the glass window lies a cozy daybed. Ocean Wing guests may personalize their pillows; there is a pillow menu with several therapeutic pillows to choose from.
Room amenities include a flat panel television with dozens of channels. The minibar is stocked with chilled beverages like beer and carbonated water. Snacks are provided too. As Rasa Ria has its own water bottling facility, drinking water is filled in reusable glass bottles. With the exception of red wine, all consumables are complimentary for Ocean Wing guests and are replenished daily.
In the bathroom, a marble countertop with dual sinks presents an opulent appearance. Complimentary toiletries, courtesy of L'Occitane, are provided. The bathroom is also stocked with bath towels, bathrobes and beach slippers.
Our room has a huge balcony with sweeping views of the sea. Cushioned chairs allow us to relax and enjoy the cooling breeze that blows perpetually from the sea. Of course, the main highlight at the balcony is an oversized whirlpool bathtub.
Once per stay, guests of Ocean Wing may request for a complimentary bath indulgence. Available options are Deluxe Bubble Bath, Mineral Bath Salts and Rose Petal Bath. After an exhausting day exploring the resort, it is nice to pamper ourselves with a warm bath in the whirlpool bathtub.
The Ocean Wing has a lagoon-shaped swimming pool that is exclusive to its guests. Since there are fewer people here, the pool area presents a more private setting. The main swimming pool is open from 7:00am to 7:00pm. There are lifeguards on duty.
Next to the swimming pool is an outdoor jacuzzi, which is meant solely for Ocean Wing guests. With scenic views of Dalit Beach, the jacuzzi is the perfect spot to unwind in the morning and the evening.
Ocean Wing has several well-kept green lawns. In the middle of a private garden is an oversized chessboard. As for guests who enjoy sunbathing, countless sunloungers are scattered throughout the entire the pool area.
Guests can easily order drinks and snacks from kiosks like Ice Monkee and Sampan Bar. Popular cocktails at Sampan Bar are Tebu Mojito, Nanas Pandan Colada and Kayu Manis Whisky. Happy Hour runs from 4:00pm to 9:00pm daily.
Rasa Ria has one of the most amazing beaches in Sabah. The white sands of Dalit Beach stretch two kilometers from end to end. I am also surprised that it is a 200-meter walk from the resort's green lawns to the water's edge!
The wide expanse of Dalit Beach is sporadically dotted with coconut palm trees and gazebos. Several pavilions on the beach provide the perfect setting for romantic dinners. Enjoy a glass of champagne while immersing yourself in the enchanting view.
Of the many beaches that I came across, Dalit Beach is among the best that I had the pleasure of setting foot. The white sand here is as fine as powder! The best way to appreciate the powdery sand is by walking barefoot. I must also acknowledge that the beach is virtually devoid of marine debris.
The South China Sea lies beyond Dalit Beach. On a sunny afternoon, it is certainly tempting to take a dip in the cooling water. While it is generally safe to swim, Rasa Ria posts a lifeguard here to keep an eye on things.
Guests who wish to venture further from the shore can visit the Water Sports Centre. Popular sea activities include jet skiing and parasailing. Most of these activities are chargeable. However each day, resort guests enjoy 1-hour complimentary use of the boogie board, ocean kayak and catamaran.
The Wedding Pavilion provides an idyllic spot to exchange vows. You cannot ask for a more romantic setting than the beautiful white beach as the backdrop! Rasa Ria has a comprehensive range of wedding packages.
The Cool Zone Kids Club is meant for children between ages 5 and 11. This amenity allows parents to leave their children in good hands while they enjoy some private time.
There are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to keep the young ones entertained throughout the day. For instance, the Sunken Ship is a popular spot for children to play. A hanging bridge connects both ends of the "broken ship".
Adventure Point is an outdoor playground on the sandy beach. The place has a large number sandpits, swings, balancing beams, climbing wall and animal play sculptures. Adventure Point is suitable for children between the ages of 4 and 12. Parents are advised to supervise their kids at all times.
Located on a headland next to Dalit Beach, Rasa Ria Reserve encompasses 64 acres of virgin tropical jungle. Only a small section the nature reserve is open to visitors; the remaining sanctuary is kept untouched. The Discovery Centre serves as the gateway to Rasa Ria Reserve.
The Discovery Centre gives an introduction to Rasa Ria Reserve, including the fact that it started as a rehabilitation center for orang utans. There are many exhibits of indigenous animals and plants that can be found in the nature reserve. The Discovery Centre is open to the public.
Visitors are also welcome to stroll in a small garden behind the Discovery Centre. This area features a number of tropical herbs and spices. There are also several colonies of stingless bees. Stingless bees can be raised for their honey.
Rasa Ria Reserve has several trails with varying lengths. Points of interest include a canopy walkway and animal watering hole. Guided hikes can be arranged at the Discovery Centre. For safety reasons, visitors must be escorted by park rangers at all times.
The lush tropical forest is home to small mammals, birds, reptiles, arthropods and plants. If you are lucky, you might encounter a troop of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Keep a safe distance from them as these wild animals are not accustomed to human contact.
Many animals in the nature reserve are nocturnal. Therefore, the best way to watch them is by talking a Night Walk. Night vision goggles allow visitors to view these animals in total darkness. The goggles also have camera functions. The Night Walk starts at 7:30pm and usually takes 2 hours to complete.
To get closer to Mother Nature, guests may also opt to have breakfast in Rasa Ria Reserve. "Breakfast With A View" provides an excellent view of sunrise. The experience starts at 5:30am with a guided hike to Ria Lookout.
Perched on Ria Lookout is an observation tower. From here, visitors enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area. To the west of Rasa Ria Resort are large tracts of mangrove forest. On a clear day, one can even see the majestic Mount Kinabalu about 50 kilometers away!
Breakfast is served on picnic tables under the trees. Due to limited space, the place can only accommodate 20 people every day. This unforgettable experience is definitely worth the early morning wake up!
Dalit Bay Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole golf course within the resort's grounds. In-house guests enjoy special rates when using its facilities. The main building in the country club is where the Golfers' Terrace and The Spa are located.
Treatment options at The Spa include traditional body massages using natural herbs that can be found in Sabah. Alternatively, guests may also request for massage appointments on the beach. There are several pavilions for this purpose.
Coffee Terrace is Rasa Ria's all-day dining restaurant. Located at the Garden Wing, this is where most in-house guests have breakfast. The eatery also serves buffet dinner every evening. The buffet theme rotates throughout the week. For instance on Saturday, the theme is "Taste Of Asia".
Cultural performance is held at Coffee Terrace every Wednesday and Saturday evening. The program showcases traditional dances of native Sabahan tribes. The performance concludes with a spectacular "magunatip" dance, after which diners can also participate. The cultural performance was supposed to take place at the seaside restaurant, Tepi Laut. However, Tepi Laut is currently closed for renovations.
Ria Café is a cozy spot where guests can pass the time in a casual setting. The coffee here is brewed from illy coffee beans. Ria Café also serves sandwiches, ice cream and other snacks. There are several computer terminals that allow guests to access the Internet.
Naan - Flavours of India is Rasa Ria's award-winning Indian restaurant. Headed by Executive Sous Chef Shantanu Seth, the restaurant primarily serves a diverse variety of regional dishes in the subcontinent. Naan is open for dinner only.
Next to Naan is Kozan Teppan-yaki (高山), a Japanese restaurant led by Chef de Cuisine Ben Lee. Kozan specializes in teppanyaki (鉄板焼き) fare. The restaurant has several grilling stations where food is cooked in front of diners. Like Naan, Kozan is only open in the evening.
Oceano Italian Restaurant is located at the Ocean Wing. It provides both indoor and al fresco dining options. Specializing in classic Italian cuisine, Oceano's signature dishes are Margherita Pizza and Gnocchi Di Patate. Oceano also offers a fine selection of Italian wines.
Ocean Wing guests enjoy a number of perks such as complimentary pre-dinner cocktail reception in the evening. Starting at 5:00pm, the ambience is kept lively by a 3-piece music band.
During the cocktail reception, Ocean Wing guests enjoy free flow of drinks including beer and wine. Delicate morsels of canapés serve to stimulate the appetite before guests make their way to dinner.
Breakfast is served between 6:30am and 10:30am. Guests of Ocean Wing may opt to have breakfast at Oceano. Oceano provides a more secluded setting compared to Coffee Terrace. Of course, guests can also opt to have breakfast in bed.
Starting with cold cuts, the buffet spread presents beef pastrami, smoked chicken and smoked duck. Seafood lovers can also indulge in smoked salmon and smoked mackerel.
Oceano serves several types of pizza for breakfast, including one which uses focaccia as the base. Pizza toppings include beef bacon, mushrooms, black olives, capsicum and mozzarella. Meanwhile, the egg station is where egg dishes are prepared upon request.
The Chinese section serves dim sum (点心), Chinese buns (包子), fried rice, noodles and congee. Korean choices are kimchi (김치), dakgangjeong (닭강정) and dakgaejang (닭개장).
Other popular breakfast foods include chicken sausages, beef bacon, grilled tomatoes, hash browns, roast potatoes, waffles, pancakes and breakfast cereals.
The pastry team has prepared a variety of cakes, muffins and bread to delight our sweet tooth. Also impressive are the wide selection of fruit tarts, pies and doughnuts. Gluten-free choices are available too.
Once again, Rasa Ria distinctively demonstrates the impeccable Shangri-La hospitality. All staff members, from the concierge to housekeepers, pay attention to the smallest details. Needless to say, the pristine white beach of Dalit Beach is certainly the most unique aspect of the resort. The view is exceptionally mesmerizing during sunset.
To enjoy the best room rates at Rasa Ria, reservations can be made through the Image may be NSFW.

The Resort Café

Special thanks to Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa for extending this food review invitation.

Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa is a 5-star property in Sunway City. The majestic building has a touch of Middle Eastern charm in its décor. As part of Sunway Group, Sunway Resort operates under the same management as Sunway Hotel Georgetown and Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya.
The Resort Café is the main restaurant inside the hotel. Its dining area is spacious indeed. Egyptian motif on the walls presents a mystical ambience. We are visiting the eatery this evening to savor the ongoing Christmas-theme buffet. Inspired by nutcracker dolls, the resort's Christmas theme this year is "Let's Get Crackin'".
One of the popular Christmas dishes is Honey Glazed Turkey. As per tradition, the turkey is served with giblet gravy and cranberry sauce. On the side are chestnut stuffing and an assortment of grilled vegetables.
Next, Roasted Briyani Turkey combines the traditional roast turkey with tandoori-style seasoning. This unusual marriage makes the turkey arguably more appealing. The turkey comes with a variety of grilled vegetables.
Served alongside the turkey is an attractive platter of briyani rice. Cooked with spices and ghee, the rice is garnished with hard-boiled eggs and almond flakes. Long-grain basmati rice is used. Basmati rice has a looser texture compared to jasmine rice.
Meanwhile, the Oven Baked Whole Fish is seasoned reasonably well. I also enjoy the fish's firm texture. The fish is dressed with a small amount of sweet-and-savory sauce.
The Chinese counter serves steamboat with over 30 ingredients and dipping sauces. The main highlight here is obviously the large barramundi. Chilled over ice, the fish is extremely fresh and succulent. Although several types of soup are available, I personally prefer clear soup as it is the best choice to enjoy the fish's natural flavor.
Seafood on ice covers marine delicacies like oysters, scallops, squids and shrimps. Lemon juice and Tabasco sauce serve as condiments. As for diners who love Japanese food, salmon sashimi is available too.
Taking a detour to Middle Eastern fare, Chicken Shawarma is perhaps the most familiar dish of all. Shawarma has been prepared ahead of time instead of being shaved from a vertical spit as some restaurants do. Nevertheless, I find the pita bread and its chicken filling quite appetizing.
Quinoa is cereal-like crop from South America. Being a rich source of protein, quinoa is favored by vegetarians and people with gluten-related disorders. The Pomegranate Quinoa Salad is garnished with parsley, bean sprouts and pomegranate seeds.
Moving on to the confectionery section, there are mouthwatering Christmas pastries such as Yule Log, Stollen, Fruitcake and Christmas Pudding. Other notable choices are Mixed Berries Cheesecake, Chocolate Hazelnut Cake and Brownies.
Last but not least, the fruits section presents a variety of cut fruits like apples, oranges, pineapples, papaya, watermelon, star fruit and cantaloupe.
Sunway Resort's festive buffet runs from 3 December 2018 to 1 January 2019. Both lunch and dinner sessions are available. The number of dishes here is staggering! However if I were to nitpick, I feel that the variety of Christmas pastries is somewhat underwhelming.

Morganfield's

This article is part of my Christmas 2018 compilation.

Special thanks to Morganfield's for extending this food review invitation.

Morganfield's, Home of Sticky Bones, is famous for its chargrilled pork ribs. The very first outlet in existence is at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Like other outlets, the restaurant's wooden theme presents a rustic appearance reminiscent of the American Old West.
Most dining tables are placed inside the restaurant itself. In addition, there are more dining tables "outdoors", which is not really open-air because the place still receives air conditioning from the shopping mall. The tables here can be moved along a rail. This allows the staff to combine or separate individual tables to suit the number of diners in each party.
The Pork Sausage Platter (RM39.90) features four signature sausages: Herby Hog, Spicy Devil, Smokey Bandit and Cheesy Cheese. These sausages are stuffed by Morganfield's; frozen ones are available for purchase too. The platter also comes with coleslaw and garlic aioli.
Another bestselling appetizer at Morganfield's is the Onion Blossom (RM22.90). Using a special kitchen utensil, a colossal onion is cut in the likeness of a blossoming flower. The onion is coated with light batter and spices, and then deep-fried to golden perfection. The onion's crispiness is simply mouthwatering! Note that the Onion Blossom is a seasonal dish so it may not be available all year long.
Meanwhile, Smokin' Duck Salad (RM32.90) comprises of fresh greens with smoked duck breasts, hard-boiled eggs and century eggs. The ingredients are brought together with soy vinaigrette. The salad is then garnished with sesame seeds, red chili peppers and scallions for aesthetic appeal.
In the spirit of Christmas, Morganfield's is serving the Christmas Feast (RM219.90) for sharing among 4 or 5 persons. The platter comprises of half slab of Sticky Bones Spare Ribs, Jack Daniels Glazed Baby Back, Roasted Pork Meatloaf, Christmas Roulade, Mexican Grilled Corn (elote) and two pork sausages (Herby Hog and Spicy Devil). Also included are giblet sauce, cranberry jam, red skin mashed potato, flat chips, and assorted vegetables & chestnuts.
For the Sticky Bones, available sauces are Hickory BBQ, Garlicky BBQ, Smoked Peppercorn, Rib Rub and Asian Charred. We opted for Asian Charred, which turns out to be an excellent choice! Similar to Chinese-style "char siu", the seasoning is sweet and savory. Thanks to the lovely marinade, the pork is scrumptious up to the bones.
Jingle Juice (RM14.90) is the special drink during this festive season. Served in a Hurricane glass, the drink is concocted from orange juice, watermelon juice, lime juice, passion fruit syrup and lemon lime soda. The fizzy drink is topped with a scoop of calamansi sorbet and mint.
Other popular beverages from the regular menu are Coffee On The Rocks (RM13.90), Virgin Apple Mojito (RM16.90), Connor's Original Stout (RM16.90), Kronenbourg Blanc (RM18.90) and Berry Easy (RM16.90). In the case of Coffee On The Rocks, the ice cubes are actually frozen blocks of espresso!
In case the Christmas Feast is too large for your party, go for the Mini Christmas Feast (RM109.90) or Christmas Roulade (RM36.90) instead. Morganfield's festive menu is available until 1 January 2019, so hurry up if you do not wish to sit this one out!

Sukkah

This article is part of my Christmas 2018 compilation.

Special thanks to Olive Tree Hotel for extending this food review invitation.

In the spirit of Christmas, Olive Tree Hotel is serving the Festive Buffet Luncheon at Sukkah Coffee House. The meal is held every weekday from 12 December 2018 to 28 December 2018 (except on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). A broader menu is prepared on Sundays.
For most people, the main attraction is the Roast Turkey. It is served with chestnut & raisin stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, onion rings and assorted vegetables. Giblet gravy and cranberry sauce serve as condiments. Personally, I feel that the turkey is on the drier side of things. It would have been tastier if the meat were juicier.
On the other hand, I truly enjoy the Turkey Square. The loaf of turkey is glazed with honey, giving it a sweet touch which gratifies my taste buds. The Turkey Square is garnished with candied pineapple slices, but I think grilled pineapple slices would have been a better choice.
Seafood Paella is a popular dish from the coastal city of Valencia, Spain. The rice is cooked with seafood broth, which explains the dish's rich taste. Also included are delectable seafood like shrimps and green-lipped mussels. I cannot recommend this dish highly enough.
The Lamb Sausages are commendable too. Served with braised red cabbage and apples, the sausages are not too salty even when eaten directly.
Proceeding to the Japanese corner, I am pleased to see cold soba (蕎麦) on the menu. The noodle is customarily eaten with a sweet sauce called soba tsuyu (蕎麦つゆ). Other delicacies at the Japanese corner are omelette (玉子焼き) and assorted sushi (寿司).
The chocolate fountain steals the spotlight at the desserts section. Instead of milk chocolate, Sukkah uses white chocolate to fit the Christmas theme. Skewered marshmallows and apricots are provided. The chocolate fountain appeals to children in particular.
Mixed Fruit Cake is a popular treat during Christmas. The cake is filled with candied fruits, dried nuts and spices, making every morsel very satisfying. According to the traditional recipe, the cake can also be drenched with rum.
The Cranberry Layer Cake has cream cheese frosting between layers, while the Raspberry Chocolate Mousse is topped with thick raspberry sauce. Both choices are certainly recommended.
I am also attracted by the presentation of Violet Mousse. It is elegantly decorated with jasmine tea jelly and chocolate squares. At the top is a block of chocolate molded in the likeness of Santa Claus.
The gingerbread house is meant for decoration. However if you crave gingerbread like a fox, you may devour the poor gingerbread man!
Compared to other Christmas buffet menus that I tasted so far, Olive Tree Hotel places more emphasis on confections. As far as yuletide meals are concerned, I think this is a move in the right direction.

Area 51

Special thanks to Area 51 for extending this food review invitation.

Area 51 is a peculiar building along Burmah Road (Jalan Burma). Surrounded by chain link fence with barb wire on top, the place looks like a restricted military installation. Its ominous appearance is more prominent after sunset, during which red strobe lights warn off potential "intruders".
To all personnel with the proper security clearance (or with a license to drink), feel free to enter Area 51. The interior looks like a top secret military research center. This is obviously a parody of the actual Area 51, a highly classified air force base in Nevada, United States.
Area 51 is staffed by "research scientists" in white lab coats. Even the drinks bar is equipped with beakers and test tubes, the types that you normally find in a chemistry lab. This is probably where a deranged scientist seeks the elixir of immortality.
In case you do not understand sarcasm, none of the above is true. For the record, Area 51 is an alien-themed drinking establishment. At its center is a small stage where a 2-piece live band (Sunday to Thursday) or disc jockey (Friday to Saturday) keeps the place lively throughout the night. The main crowd usually arrives around 11:00pm.
Pit your skills (and luck) against your buddies with a round of Fly Pong (2 players) or Faith Roulette (8 players). Just order a jug of booze and see who gets the last laugh. And if you have top secret plans to discuss with your fellow comrades, there is a soundproofed private room at a corner.
The beverage menu at Area 51 covers beer (draft and bottled), liquor and wine. Signature cocktails here are Bloody Health, ET601 and 6.Sickers. If you crave any specific cocktail that is not in the menu, the bartender-cum-chemist is happy to see what he can concoct for you.
Bloody Health (RM51.00) is a popular cocktail for casual drinkers. Using gin as the base, the drink has fruity tanginess with a touch of sweetness. Meanwhile, dry ice vapor from a second beaker keeps the cocktail bubbly and foggy.
So if you have any business dealing with weapons research or alien diplomacy, Area 51 is where your presence is expected. Just remember that what happens in Area 51 stays in Area 51.

As You Like Hong Kong Chicken Pot

Special thanks to As You Like Hong Kong Chicken Pot for extending this food review invitation.

As You Like Hong Kong Chicken Pot (香港随变烧烤麻辣鸡煲) is a restaurant at Burmah Square. The air-conditioned eatery occupies the former location of Repotblic.
Originating in Hong Kong, As You Like Hong Kong Chicken Pot started as an open-air food stall (大排档) in 2010. The founder is known for her unorthodox approach to food. This is reflected in the slogan "人无我有,人有我优", which loosely translates to "I have what others don't have, I excel in what others have".
Hong Kong Fried Fish Skin (香港脆炸鱼皮, RM6.00) serves as an excellent appetizer. Surprisingly, the fish skin remains fairly crispy even when it cools down.
The signature dish here is As You Like Signature Chicken Pot (随变招牌鸡煲). There are 5 soup choices: Si Chuan Spicy Chicken Pot (招牌麻辣鸡煲), Sour Pig Stomach Chicken Pot (酸菜猪肚鸡煲), Authentic Chicken Pot (原味清汤鸡煲), Tomato Chicken Pot (香浓鲜番茄鸡煲) and Spicy Chicken Pot (惹味香辣鸡煲). Each option comes with half chicken.
We opted for the Tomato Chicken Pot (RM68.00). The tomato soup presents a soothing tanginess that does not overwhelm the palate. Meanwhile, chicken complements the soup pretty well. After consuming the chicken, the soup can also be used for steamboat.
Popular hot pot ingredients are Local Kurobuta Pork Belly (本地黑豚五花楠片, RM18.00), Bursting Meatballs (爆浆猪肉丸, RM8.00) and Local Fish Balls (本地鳗鱼丸, RM6.00). As for vegetables, there are Long Cabbage (大白菜, RM5.00), Lotus Slices (莲藕片, RM5.00), Fresh Mushrooms (鲜冬菇, RM4.00) and Golden Mushrooms (金针菇, RM4.00).
The major highlight this evening is Homemade Bean Curd Rolls (秘制现炸响铃卷, RM10.00). These cylindrical crackers are essentially deep-fried tofu skin (腐皮). It is not easy to prepare them as the rolling process can be quite delicate. The rolls are best enjoyed by blanching them in the hot pot for several seconds. Surprisingly, I do not perceive any degree of oiliness!
Japan Inaniwa Udon (日本稻庭乌冬, RM6.00) is a special type of udon from Akita Prefecture. Like ramen, the dough is kneaded by hand. This explains why the noodle has a springy texture reminiscent of ramen. Meanwhile, diners who like garlic chives can order a serving of Homemade Chive Dumplings (手工韭菜饺, RM10.00) too.
In effort to keep the ingredients as authentic as possible, the restaurant sources a number of ingredients from Hong Kong. For first-timers, my recommendations are Hong Kong Mushroom Pork Balls (香港香菇贡丸, RM12.00) and Hong Kong Fish Skin Dumplings (香港鱼皮饺, RM10.00).
Popular drinks here are Homemade Watercress With Honey & Lemon (自家制西洋菜柠蜜) and Homemade Flower Tea (自家制山楂洛神花茶, RM12.00). The latter is infused with Chinese hawthorn and roselle flowers.
The signature dish here, As You Like Signature Chicken Pot, is absolutely commendable. I am impressed by the fact that the soup does not feel surfeiting despite several refills. In terms of pricing, the restaurants offers a wide range of ingredients to fit the budget of most people. Indeed, I am looking forward to savoring other versions of hot pot especially Si Chuan Spicy Chicken Pot and Sour Pig Stomach Chicken Pot.

Kinabalu Park

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Covering over 750 square kilometers of wilderness in the Crocker Range, Kinabalu Park is Malaysia's first World Heritage Site. Kinabalu Park Headquarters is located near the town of Kundasang, approximately 2 hours by car from Kota Kinabalu.
The admission fee is RM3.00 for Malaysians and RM15.00 for foreigners. Visitors are allowed to drive inside the park but parking spaces are limited. Fortunately, there are ample parking spaces just outside the park entrance.
The heart of Kinabalu Park is Mount Kinabalu. At 4,095 meters above sea level, Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Malaysia. The mountain is so tall that clouds tend to go around it.
The journey to the summit usually takes 2 days. Most climbers depart from Timpohon Gate near Kinabalu Park Headquarters. After camping overnight at Laban Rata, climbers make the final push to the summit around 3:00am in order to catch the sunrise.
For visitors who do not intend to climb Mount Kinabalu, there are many hiking trails around Kinabalu Park Headquarters. Some of these trails lead to scenic overlooks.
If you are visiting Kinabalu Park for several hours only, it is a good idea to visit the Botanical Garden near Dewan Kinabalu. The garden is open from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Admission to the Botanical Garden requires a separate ticket, which costs RM4.00 for Malaysians.
The slopes of Mount Kinabalu span four climate zones, making Kinabalu Park home to countless flora and fauna species. Botanical Garden exhibits many native plants that one might encounter in the park. Many of them are used as traditional medicine by indigenous Dusun people.
A walking path takes a loop around the 5-acre Botanical Garden. It is possible to complete the trail in less than 30 minutes. But if you are truly interested in botany, you can easily spend hours here.
High precipitation on the slopes of Mount Kinabalu makes the air here perpetually damp. The mountain is also the source of many rivers and streams.
Tristaniopsis, known locally as "lumu lunu", is one of the prominent plants here. The tree appears "naked" because it sheds its bark frequently. This prevents parasitic plants from growing on it.
Ferns cover virtually every square inch of the rainforest. Some even grow on dead wood. Ferns do not have flowers; they reproduce via spores.
Mosses and liverworts act as a giant "sponge" for rainwater. Because they are very sensitive to changes in the ecosystem, mosses and liverworts are early indicators of pollution.
Bird's-nest fern tends to grow on the trunks and branches of trees. Its nest-like leaves allow the fern to collect rainwater and falling debris. Organic matter provides nutrients to the plant.
Pitcher plant is one of the few carnivorous plants in the world. Its pitcher-like leaves contain nectar that attracts and traps small insects. After drowning, the insects gradually dissolve and their nutrients are absorbed by the plant.
Medinilla, also known as "pink maiden", is one of the most prominent plants in Kinabalu Park. Its bright, pink flowers are easily recognized. Its fruit is an important source of food for birds and squirrels. Medinilla is also used in folk medicine.
Lodges and chalets inside Kinabalu Park Headquarters are operated by Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. There are also two restaurants here: Balsam Buffet Restaurant and Liwagu Restaurant. Lodging and food prices are rather expensive. Fortunately, there are cheaper accommodation and restaurant choices just outside the park entrance.

Sabah Tea Restaurant

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Sabah Tea Resort is located on the rolling hills near Kampung Nalapak, approximately 20 kilometers from Ranau. This attraction is open to the public. Admission is free.
Spanning over 2,500 hectares of temperate farmland, Sabah Tea Garden is the largest tea plantation in Sabah. It has a gift shop where visitors can purchase its tea products.
Sabah Tea Restaurant is an open-air restaurant next to the tea plantation. While dining, customers enjoy a scenic view of the majestic Mount Kinabalu. The mountain looks imposing despite being 30 kilometers away!
Sabah Tea Scone Set (RM23.50) is served on a tier stand and comes with a pot of tea for two persons. Tea is brewed separately and then poured into the teapot. I was expecting tea leaves to be steeped inside.
The four scones are flavored with green tea. Jam and cream are provided as spreads. Unfortunately, the taste of green tea is very mild; it mainly serves as coloring. In addition, I feel that the scones are too dry for comfort.
Sabah Tea Waffles (RM15.50) are also infused with green tea. Besides aesthetic appeal, the waffles are indistinguishable from regular waffles. Honey is provided, but I think some butter would be great.
Sabah Tea Pancakes (RM12.00) are soft, chewy and slightly moist. They appear more similar to apam balik than to Western pancakes. The pancakes are served with honey.
Overall, the food taste is acceptable but there is definitely room for improvement. Scones, waffles and pancakes could have been much better if green tea were given a more prominent role.
Sabah Tea Restaurant also serves a variety of local and Western dishes. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to order more food today.

Lok Kyun

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Kedai Makanan Dan Minuman Lok Kyun (乐群酒家) is a popular kopitiam in Tuaran. The eatery is known for its signature Goreng Tuaran Mee (炒斗亚兰面, RM7.00). The recipe is so popular that it has inspired similar dishes in Tamparuli and Kota Kinabalu.
Tuaran Mee uses springy noodle made from flour and egg yolks. The noodle is first deep-fried in oil, and then stir-fried with eggs for the rich eggy taste. The dish is also served with Tenom rolls (蛋卷), barbecued pork (叉烧), sliced pork, vegetables and a bowl of soup.
Overall, Tuaran Mee has a satisfying mouthfeel and taste due to the generous amount of eggs. Despite being an hour away from Kota Kinabalu, the journey to this shop is certainly worth the time.

Restoran Kyun Lok Baru

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Restoran Kyun Lok Baru (新群乐茶餐室) is a small kopitiam in the small town of Tamparuli, Sabah. The shop is quite hidden compared to a nearby eatery, Restoran Wun Chiap. Most customers are local townsfolk; I suspect few (if any) people from Kota Kinabalu even know the existence of Restoran Kyun Lok Baru.
The signature dish here is Tamparuli Mee (担波罗里面, RM6.00). It is nearly identical to Tuaran Mee in the neighboring town, but Tamparuli locals refuse to acknowledge any relation. Like its famous cousin, Tamparuli Mee is fried with eggs. The springy noodle also comes with Tenom rolls (蛋卷), char siew (叉烧) and a bowl of clear soup.
In my opinion, Tamparuli Mee is drier and uses thinner noodle, while Tuaran Mee is oilier and has stronger taste of eggs. It is difficult to say which one is better as this is a matter of personal preference. But if you want to know my opinion, I think Tuaran Mee has a slight edge.

Gerai Sudi Mampir

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Jalan Sulaman is a road leading from Kota Kinabalu to Rasa Ria. There are more than two dozen food stalls along the road. The place is very popular among locals as evidenced by many parked cars on both sides of the road. As recommended by a Sabahan foodie, we decided to check out Gerai Sudi Mampir.
Like other nearby stalls, Gerai Sudi Mampir serves Lokan Panggang as its signature dish. Lokan is a type of shellfish that is commonly found in mangrove swamps. It is substantially larger than regular clams. Lokan comes in two sizes: medium and large. The latter is generally preferred.
Lokan Panggang (RM15.00 for large size) is grilled over burning firewood. Half of the shell is removed to expose the juicy flesh inside. Lokan is seasoned with a special homemade sauce that is extremely spicy yet addictive. The taste is exquisite indeed!
As for drinks, young coconuts are excellent in quenching thirst. There are also alternative choices like Puding Kelapa (coconut pudding) and Coconut Shake.
We opted for Kelapa Bakar (RM5.00). Using its shell as a pot, coconut water is served piping hot. I must say that cooked coconut is more aromatic than uncooked ones. Warm coconut water certainly casts the liquid in a different light.

D' Place Kinabalu

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

If you are keen to savor authentic Kadazandusun cuisine, one of the best places in Kota Kinabalu is D' Place Kinabalu in Plaza Shell. The restaurant's facade features a longhouse with thatched roof and an orang utan. D' Place Kinabalu serves buffet dinner every evening from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.
Rice is the staple food of Kadazandusun people. Linopot is a traditional dish where rice and mashed taro are wrapped in doringin leaves. While cooking, the rice is dyed purple by taro. Linopot is customarily eaten with condiments such as Tuhau and Hinava.
Another staple food in Borneo is Ambuyat, which is made of sago starch. Ambuyat is tasteless on its own, so it is typically dipped into Sup Pinasakan Bosungan. The traditional way to eat this dish is by using a two-pronged bamboo fork called candas.
Pinasakan Bosungan is ikan basung (bigeye scads) braised in turmeric broth. Similar in appearance to mackerel, ikan basung has lots of tiny bones. The fish is commonly used in Kadazandusun cuisine because it is fairly cheaply and easily available.
The next dish is Rebung With Salted Fish. Bamboo shoots do not lose their crunchiness even when cooked. They are also capable of absorbing flavors from other ingredients, such as salted fish in this case.
As for vegetables, Bavang Koubasanan uses wild spring onions that are only found in the Bornean rainforest. The dish is also fried with torch ginger, garlic chives and rubber tree mushrooms.
Moving on, Curry Chicken is well known among most Malaysians. The spicy poultry dish is cooked with potatoes. Coconut milk gives the curry a creamy consistency.
Kadazandusun people share many similarities with the Malays. For instance, both cuisines often serve ulam-ulaman (raw vegetables) as appetizers. The vegetables presented here are ulam raja (king's salad), kacang botol (winged beans), okra (lady's finger), cucumber, carrots, tomatoes and cabbage.
Dipping sauces for ulam-ulaman include sambal belacan asam limau (spicy sauce with shrimp paste & lime juice), sambal tuhau (pickled wild ginger sauce), sambal hijau (green chili sauce) and sambal kicap bakar (spicy soy sauce).
Also available is Asian Bambangan Curry Noodle. The noodle dish is served with curry, bambangan (wild mango) and tofu puffs. Other ingredients include fish balls, fishcakes and hard-boiled eggs.
Butod, the larva of sago grub, is considered a delicacy in Borneo. D' Place Kinabalu has tank full of live ones! Butod is traditionally eaten raw or even alive. Alternatively, butod can also be fried or used for dishes like Sushi Butod (RM15.90). Its creamy body is a rich source of protein. The head is often discard because it has a hard shell.
D' Place Kinabalu has several local products that can be purchased for home use. First, Bambangan is an endemic Bornean fruit that is sometimes dubbed "wild mango". Next, Tuhau is a traditional pickle made from wild ginger, lime juice, scallions, chili peppers and salt. Moving on, Hinava is marinated fish with wild ginger and lime juice. Lastly, Lihing is a popular wine fermented from glutinous rice.
Starting 7:30pm every evening, a dance troupe entertains customers with a cultural performance in the dining area. The group showcases the traditional dances of several indigenous tribes in Sabah. The show also includes a demonstration of blowpipe marksmanship and magunatip dance.
D' Place Kinabalu's buffet dinner is priced at RM45.90 net for adults and RM22.45 net for children. Drinks and butod are not included in the buffet and have to be ordered separately. During lunch hours, the restaurant has à la carte and set meal menus. The food here is entirely pork-free.

Kim Hing Lee

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Sinsuran Complex is a bustling commercial area in Kota Kinabalu. Kedai Kopi Kim Hing Lee (金兴利茶室) is a popular eatery here. Operating since the 1980s, the kopitiam claims to be the pioneer of pork noodle (生肉面) in town.
Pork Noodle (生肉粉, RM8.00) can be served dry (干捞) or with soup. I opted for the former as it is more popular among locals. Soy sauce and shallot oil (葱头油) make the noodle quite appetizing. The dish also comes with a bowl of soup that is loaded with succulent pork slices.
Meanwhile the Pig's Organ Soup (猪什汤, RM14.00) contains pork liver, intestines and kidney. If you are fond of pork offal, you will certainly fall in love with this dish. By the way, the soup is boiled using charcoal; no wonder it is piping hot!

Tasty Toasty

Tasty Toasty is an air-conditioned eatery at Cantonment Road (Jalan Cantonment). It serves all-day breakfast and Western dishes.
Only the ground floor of the two-storey building is used as dining area. A drinks counter occupies a substantial portion of it.
Titan Breakfast (RM19.90) comprises of hash browns, chicken ham, grilled tomato, toasted bread, sausages, fried eggs, baked beans and garden salad. I am also surprised to see passion fruit on the platter.
The cup of Latte (RM8.90) contains two shots of espresso. Steamed milk provides creamy consistency and a small degree of sweetness. The coffee is reasonably smooth, but its bitter aftertaste does not linger for too long.

Kopi Ping Cafe

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Just across Gaya Street from Sabah Tourism Board is a local eatery called Kopi Ping Cafe (咖啡冰). This air-conditioned place is quite popular among youngsters. The menu is entirely pork-free.
Kopi Ping Cafe serves local favorites that one may find in hawker centers. Its signature dishes are KP Nasi Lemak (招牌椰浆饭), Black Pepper Beef Ho Fun (黑胡椒炒牛河), Creamy Butter Chicken Rice (奶油鸡饭) and Fish Sauce Mee Hoon (雨露米粉).
For drinks, Kopi Ping (咖啡冰, RM3.90) is the right choice if you enjoy bold coffee flavor. Chilled and served with ice, the drink is quite satisfying.
Meanwhile, Bandung Special (玫瑰糖浆三色奶茶冰, RM4.90) consists of milk tea, rose syrup and gula melaka (palm sugar). Unfortunately, the drink is way too sweet for my liking.

5 Star Hainanese Chicken Rice & BBQ

This article is part of my 2018 Kota Kinabalu trip series.

Gaya Street is where you can find many popular restaurants in Kota Kinabalu. 5 Star Hainanese Chicken Rice & BBQ (五星海南家乡鸡饭和烧腊) is one of them. The shop is sandwiched between Yee Fung Laksa and Sabah Chilli Pan Mee.
A serving of Hainanese Steamed Chicken Rice (海南白切鸡饭, RM8.50) comprises of chicken thigh (鸡二度), oily rice (油饭) and clear soup. The portion is just right for one person.
The steamed chicken has yellow skin with tender flesh underneath. Unfortunately, it contains too much fat and feels rather greasy. According to the owner, his supply of chicken is inconsistent in terms of quality.
